Too Many Christmas Cookies?

December 10th, 2007 (02:29 pm)

current mood: incredulous

Does Santa Claus need Weight Watchers? The U.S. Surgeon General has come out with a statement so idiotic that I initially thought it was a joke. It's not. He says that Santa Claus's excess weight makes him an "enabler" to the many children in the United States who are obese. Given the high rate of obesity among American children, he believes we should rethink the Santa icon to bring him down to a healthier weight. I doubt that thousands of children around the nation are saying, "Santa Claus is fat and everyone likes him, so I don't need to worry about my weight!" Besides, the Santa Claus image has had "a round face and a little round belly that shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly" since long before childhood obesity became a problem.

There's a website devoted to those who oppose slimming Santa down. It's called Keep Santa Fat. There's a petition to sign if you think Santa is just fine the way he is.
