In Memoriam: Goodbye, Old Friend

March 17th, 2010 (07:19 pm)

Tomorrow, my husband's 15-year-old Mercury Tracer station wagon begins what will probably be the first leg of its journey to that Great Junkyard In the Sky. Two months ago, a truck plowed into it at an intersection. The damage didn't look too terrible. It's dented on one side, and the door sticks when you try to open it. But since then, the front end has just not handled quite right.

GEICO informs us that someone will be here to tow it away tomorrow so that an appraiser can take a look at the damage and see what the repairs will cost. But it turns out that Blue Book value on a 15-year-old Mercury Tracer station wagon is a big $850. Hardly anything can be fixed on a car for $850, so GEICO is guessing that the repairs will not be worth the trouble and has decided to have it towed to its site for Lost Causes for the appraisal, instead of to a garage where actual repairs would be made.

Bob doesn't drive to work. In fact, he seldom uses the car at all except on weekends. So we're going to see if we can save some money and live greener by trying to get along with only one car for a while. We may join Zip Car; several of them live a half-mile or so from our house. Beyond that, we'll use rentals and taxis when necessary. If that doesn't work out, we can always consider buying another used car in a few months.
