Ghosts and Goblins and Penguins...Oh My!

I never wrote about Halloween, which happened while my computer was waterlogged. I love Halloween. What a totally fun holiday. Everyone's happy -- except for a few religious fanatics who think it promotes devil worship. And there's none of the extended-family baggage that some other holidays can amplify. Just kids in cute costumes. Chocolate. It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown on television. Parties. More chocolate. And you can sing the "Monster Mash" whenever you like, without provoking some really odd stares. So, what's not to like?

My five-year-old dressed in his penguin costume from last year, and if possible I think he looked even cuter in it this time. It really is a great costume! He's been crazy about penguins ever since he first saw March of the Penguins a couple years ago. He had a grand time trick-or-treating, collected plenty of treats, and got very silly with his friends Sammy, Joshua, and Anika.

Most of the kids in my neighborhood are little, so they all trick-or-treat with at least one parent along. This year, I decided the grownups needed a treat, too. I kept a bottle of wine and some plastic cups near the door. Along with giving candy to the kids, I offered the grownups (only the ones I knew, none of whom were driving) a glass of wine. Most accepted, with appreciation.

An important discovery I made that night about red wines: Pinot Noir goes quite well with the new dark-chocolate Three Musketeers bars with mint, while a hearty Toscana nicely complements Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Just in case you were wondering what to serve next Halloween.
