If You Give a Mouse a Goldfish Cracker...

February 18th, 2009 (07:40 pm)

current mood: amused
current music: Pepino the Italian Mouse

So there I was in the elementary school auditorium this afternoon, taking yearbook photos of the Dance Club as they learned new moves onstage. The children were adorable, uninhibited, and intent on their dancing. We took what was supposed to be a brief break. Suddenly, from the aisle between rows of seats, one of the kindergarten girls screamed and burst into tears. She had spotted a mouse.

Pandemonium ensued. Half the children were terrified of the mouse. They jumped up on the seats or scattered in the opposite direction. The others were fascinated. They crowded closer and strewed goldfish crackers over the carpeting, either to feed the mouse or to trap it, depending on the child. I informed the front office staff that we had a mouse in the auditorium, but it was some time before the maintenance guy arrived to try to track down the poor little critter, which must have been even more terrified than the crying kindergartner. I have never seen a mouse run so fast. Another child said she'd spotted a second mouse backstage. I think the second mouse may have been a real one, but I'm pretty sure that the half-dozen reports of additional mice that soon followed were entirely imaginary.

The rest of the afternoon's Dance Club meeting was pretty much a bust. The teacher never regained the students' attention. The kindergartner never regained her composure. And the mouse is still at large.

What a great story!

I have seen a mouse run "that" fast... My company was hosting an evening reception at the Amphibian and Reptile Center of the Riverbanks Zoo. I spotted a mouse making a dash for the exit... I suspect he had previously on the dinner menu for one of the residents, and thus had every reason to be fleeing for his life... Alas, there were no distraught children involved.
