Finding Our Way

January 27th, 2009 (11:27 am)

current mood: tired

When my sister-in-law was visiting last week, my seven-year-old was fascinated by her GPS system. He'd never seen one before. This weekend, he was in the car with me while I completed several errands. At one point, I reached for the map to determine the best route to our final destination. He said, "Mommy, don't use the map. I'll be your GPS." He said I would have to follow his directions exactly. We had plenty of time, so I agreed.

He proceeded to put on his best mechanical-sounding voice and began giving me instructions: "In 1 mile, turn left...." The directions he gave may not have been for the very fastest route, but they certainly were a viable route. At one point, he didn't give me the heads-up in time, and I missed a turn. The kid didn't miss a beat. He cocked his head and then, GPS-like, announced, "Recalculating...." before telling me where to turn instead.

He now says we don't need to buy a GPS like his aunt. From now on, he says, this should be HIS job.

Ah, "recalculating"... I know it well.... (and your boy is destined to give a stand-up monologue as his valedictorian address...)

My boys LOVE my GPS -they especially love the checkered flag that appears as we reach the destination and have been known to burst out cheering and clapping when we reach the flag. We have named our GPS Jane and they sometimes talk to Jane. (They are not as thrilled with the GPS in their dad's car as it shows a red target for the destination and they relate that to the store Target.)

That's adorable! I just got my own GPS, and I'm quite the fan. "Recalculating..."
