Happy National Novel Writing Month!

November 1st, 2008 (08:39 pm)

current mood: hopeful

I'm taking part in National Novel Writing Month, also known by the rather awkward abbreviation, NaNoWriMo (pronounced Nah-No-RYE-Mo). And it starts today! The idea is to register on the NaNoWriMo website and then, over the course of November, to write a 50,000-word first draft of a novel. Or 50,000 words of a novel, if the finished book will be longer than that. You're supposed to write quickly and without editing yourself, and to do so every day until you've got 50,000 words by the end of the month. Several well-known books, including Sara Gruen's Water for Elephants, were begun as NaNoWriMo novels.

You're allowed to start with an outline or notes if you'd like, but not with any of the novel already written. I've decided for my NaNoWriMo novel that I'm going back to Advice to the Lovelorn. This is a novel I started many years ago and put aside, not because I didn't like it but because it was one of two projects I was considering for my master's thesis novel, and I decided to go with the other one.

I've been thinking about Advice to the Lovelorn a lot in the last few months. And I've realized that I need to revamp it completely. I need to change the setting, the tense, and much of the plotline. This means scrapping what I already have and starting over. So this afternoon, I did just that.

I made a good start on it today, but I'm having trouble getting into the NaNoWriMo website (too much traffic) and can't record my daily word count. I'll have to try again later. The organizers warned that there will be some kinks in the website operations at first, but that they should be worked out after the first few days of the month.

Word count for the day: 2,096 by my wordprocessor's reckoning, but I still can't enter that into the website.

Nah, I'm sitting this one out, but I might join Kate at some of her write-ins to work on another project. Good luck! It's fun to let go of your inner editor for a month and just write with wild abandon.

(However, I'm still on the NaNo site, as melydia. It seems I don't even have to log in to keep my profile there.)
