A Herd of Elk (these are dedicated to my dad, the elk hunter)

September 21st, 2008 (08:57 pm)

current mood: bouncy

More photos from my trip. These are also from Yellowstone, from the day that we drove up there before the conference in Idaho Falls began. These are all of a herd of elk we saw in a field along the Madison River, inside the National Park. It was very cool to be able to come up close enough to get good pictures -- but not TOO close (I have a good zoom lens).

I much prefer elk this way, out in the wild, than made into burger and served for dinner. My dad shot a huge one when I was in high school, and we ate elk several times a week for what seems to have been a very, very long time. Yuck. Have I mentioned that my father's obsession with shooting things is probably why I'm a vegetarian today?

I have plenty more pics from this first day at Yellowstone, from the conference itself, and from the post-conference tour, during which I visited both Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. Amazing scenery! I'll post a few at a time, as I get the chance.
