Hanna Has Arrived

September 6th, 2008 (12:00 pm)

Here in Alexandria, we'd like to extend a warm welcome to Tropical Storm Hanna, who is making our day a little more interesting. My basement has not yet flooded, and the ceiling over my desk (the one place in the house where it leaks) is still dry. Both of those things could change at any time and probably will. Obviously, we still have power. But scenes like the ones below, taken an hour ago just half a block from my house, could change that as well. This large tree branch snapped off and plummeted to its current spot, resting across live power lines. I believe the electric company has been called. They responded to a call last night involving the same tree. A smaller portion of what was probably this same branch had fallen against the power lines and caught on fire. The rain quickly put out the fire. But maybe the damage to the tree was too much for it to withstand today's rain. So far, the winds aren't too strong. But we're still only on the outskirts of the storm, which seems to be tracking farther inland than forecasters had originally thought, unfortunately for us.

I'm still thinking that overall this isn't going to be a particularly bad one. Still, I should get off my computer now, in case we do lose electricity, and drape it and the desk with their usual storm gear, two purple plastic tablecloths. Just in case the ceiling leaks.

Yikes. I hope you stay dry!
