Does size matter? It does, if you're a house!

current mood: busy

For the last two days, I've been measuring various parts of my house. We've got this homeowner's insurance update questionnaire to complete. It listed our house at 1,300 (and some) square feet. I've seen that estimate before, but I've also seen on various other papers that it was anywhere from 1,200 to 1,700. (I was thinking the truth was around 1,600). I'm guessing the differences may be due to some numbers being out of date, and some including different parts of the house. So this time, I decided to get a definitive count to correct anything that was inaccurate on the form.

The questionnaire's instructions had some specific directions for what to measure. Unfortunately, they were still unclear on some points, like whether a room that was originally a front porch but has been enclosed still counts as a porch, or has become a full-fledged room. So I'm still not positive. But by my count, we're actually a little over 1,800 square feet. So I just added 500 square feet to my house without spending a cent! Of course, if that enclosed front porch wasn't supposed to be counted, that number is too big and my original estimate of 1,600 or so is more accurate.
