Teaser Tuesday: Game of Thrones

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Books And A Beat.

Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

Grab your current read
Open to a random page
Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I'm re-reading George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones again, in preparation for a book discussion on it this month. And I happen to be on a page with a fun passage involving Arya Stark, an unconventional 9-year-old girl who often dresses like a boy. In this scene, she has made her way out of the castle through a secret passage, and now is at the gate, trying to get past the guards to gain entrance. Arya's father is the Hand of the King, a position second in power only to the king himself. But she's dirty and disheveled, and looks like a beggar boy. When the guards try to keep her out, she tells them who her father is. They laugh and try to hit her. My teaser is actually three sentences; I can't resist adding the third one! This is from on page 342.

She danced back out of the way, untouched. "I'm not a boy," she spat at them. "I'm Arya Stark of Winterfell, and if you lay a hand on me, my lord father will have both your heads on spikes.... Now are you going to open the gate, or do you need a clout on the ear to help your hearing?"
