The Line Has Been Crossed

June 1st, 2008 (04:06 pm)

current mood: calm
current music: Counting Crows

Today, I paid more than $4 a gallon to fill my car's gas tank - $4.029 per gallon, to be exact. Prices are still under $4 on my side of town, but I was out in Deepest Darkest Fairfax County, where they crossed the line last week to the Dark Side of $4. So I broke my personal record and spent $37 to fill my gas tank! I know, you who are driving huge SUVs and other gas guzzlers are rolling your eyes, accustomed to spending many times that much. But I drive a Prius! Thank goodness I won't have to fill up again for weeks.

Did you hear the testimony of the oil executives on Capitol Hill last week? They claim that high gas prices are not an indication that they are gouging consumers but simply a result of natural market forces and our reliance on unreliable, war-torn countries for our gasoline. Right. If that were true, the oil companies would not be posting record profits every quarter, and the oil company executives would not be raking in millions of dollars in bonuses and stock options.

I am so glad I get 50 mpg.

Greedy bastages. I've been playing the penny game here, taking advantage of the one-penny, two-penny price drop that usually preceeds the 10-cent spike. It's 3.72 today... by Tuesday it will be 3.80+.

It could be a lot worse. I was just talking with my sister Karen in California, who is now paying $4.35 a gallon! And she drives a Ford Explorer with a huge gas tank and lousy gas mileage.

I found that

Costco does really help. I also found out that my Costco card had been 'nuked' several years ago in the magnetic bracelet fiasco (I didn't think about it, but we have not used my card atthe cashier in forever).

I have a new card with a better photo on it, and it saved me six cents, which in the minivan is a good thing.

Re: I found that

Do you have to be a Costco member to buy gas at Costco?
