Teaser Tuesday: Barsk, The Elephants' Graveyard

Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

And here is mine for this week:

This passage is from an amazing novel to be published by Tor next month, Barsk: The Elephants' Graveyard. The author is my friend Lawrence M. Schoen. I'm reading the advance page proofs.

The teaser is from page 109. A child named Pizlo has special abilities, including the ability to converse with different things in nature. It is unclear at this point whether they actually communicate with him as well, or whether this is all in his mind. But he does seem to learn things from them that he couldn't possibly have known. In this scene, he talks to the ocean.

"He would walk out into the water until it recognized him, until a wave lifted him up in greeting. The conversation would continue as the ocean pulled him away from shore and hurled him back, over and over until there was nothing left to say."
