Teaser Tuesdays, A Bookish Meme: The Bird Artist

July 28th, 2015 (10:56 pm)

Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

Today's teaser is from The Bird Artist, by Howard Norman. Most of the action of the book takes place in the remote community of Witless Bay, in Newfoundland, a place that is rich in small-town gossip and eccentric characters. In this passage, the protagonist, a young artist and shipbuilder named Fabian, has stopped to see Helen, a crazy old curmudgeon who is obsessed with milk. She buys ten bottles of milk each day, drinks massive amounts of it, and hides the rest in a shack where she obsesses about keeping it safe from thieves.

"Loathe to anyone steals my milk," she said. Her eyes were bright, with the shocking beauty of a goat's in a decrepit goat's face. "I can be a harpy if I choose to."
