GW Strings Students Perform at "Still I Rise" Tribute to Maya Angelou

August 13th, 2014 (10:07 pm)

08-13-14 GW Orch Silver Spring 07Jon Morgan performed on the violin this evening in Silver Spring, Maryland, as part of an ensemble from the George Washington Middle School Chamber Orchestra. The group played "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," at a youth arts festival tribute to the late poet and author Maya Angelou that focused on African American culture. Steel drum group Pan Lara and various musicians, dancers, and other performers took part in the celebration. I'm posting some photos here, or follow this link to a wider selection of photos of the kids. (Just click on each photo to get to the next one.)

And here are some photos of some of the other performances that were there this evening.

In case you can't follow those links or don't have time to, I'm posting a few of the photos here, as well. First, that's Jon Morgan posing for me with his violin. The man in the next photo (standing, playing the violin) is the amazing Mr. Jones, GWMS Orchestra Director.
