Selling a House, Buying a House, and Negligent Blogging

September 25th, 2018 (06:48 pm)

P1380196 crop 40%.jpgI have been so negligent about keeping up this blog lately.

In my defense, life is even crazier right now, as we try to get our little bungalow ready to put on the market while hunting in the same neighborhood for a house with more space.

Well, I hope it will be in the same neighborhood. I love living in Del Ray and would like to stay here, but so little has been on the market, and when something is for sale, in almost every case it's either no larger than our current house, or it's over a million dollars. There just isn't much middle ground.

So we're also considering homes in some nearby neighborhoods, though I'm not thrilled about the idea of leaving Del Ray. Currently we're looking at a home just a few blocks outside of Del Ray, a cute Cape Cod. It doesn't have as much storage space as I'd like, and it doesn't give me my dream office (which is a lot larger than my current one). But it has most of what we want, and it's in good condition. And the family room, in particular, is just gorgeous.

Getting our house in shape to sell is a huge job. We're packing things up, throwing things out, and moving stuff out of it, into storage. And we've got workers fixing up various parts of it. Right now, we've cleared everything out of my office so that two guys can fix the old water damage in the walls and ceiling and repaint that room. They should finish tomorrow or the next day. Also tomorrow, the floor guy, Raymond, is measuring the kitchen to replace the ragged vinyl sheet flooring with very nice, state-of-the-art vinyl tiles printed to look like wood. And so many other jobs are waiting to be completed.

We hope to have the house on the market in 3-4 weeks. But if we can get approved for buying a house before we sell this one, we could make an offer on one this week. Stay tuned....

In the meantime, I'll try to post more frequent updates.

I just began reading a historical novel about Patsy Jefferson, the eldest daughter of Thomas Jefferson, and the person who served as his White House hostess, because he was already a widower when he became President. This passage is on page 65, as she arrives in Paris with her father for his diplomatic appointment in 1784.

"Upon our arrival, we found sooty walls within muddy walls around the city proper and beggars round every corner. But all the soot and mud gave way to beauty when, borne in a fine coach by seven horses, we passed under a bright blue sky onto the wide avenue of the Champs-Elysees."
