Teaser Tuesdays: The Fault In Our Stars

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along. Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I recently finished reading John Green's young-adult novel, The Fault In Our Stars. My book club is discussing it tonight, so I'm using it for Teaser Tuesday. My teaser is on page 174 of my eBook version, but of course that's changeable, so I'll also tell you that it's in Chapter 20. I like this because it highlights the combination of humor and sorrow that so characterizes this book. The three characters in this scene are Hazel, Augustus, and Isaac, all teenagers with cancer. Isaac, the speaker, has recently had an operation that has left him blind. He's giving kind of a "pre-eulogy" for Augustus (who, of course, is not actually dead):

"When the scientists of the future show up at my house with robot eyes and they tell me to try them on, I will tell the scientists to screw off, because I do not want to see a world without him....

And then, having made my rhetorical point, I will put my robot eyes on, because with robot eyes you can probably see through girls' shirts and stuff."

I didn't expect humor in this book! One reason I haven't read it is that I thought it would be too serious.
My Teaser Tuesday excerpt is from HEARTS IN RUIN. (http://sandranachlinger.blogspot.com)

Re: Humor?

Actually there are many funny parts. The two main characters and their friend Isaac are very funny people. I cried a lot while I read it, but I laughed out loud, too.
