A Karaoke Dream

June 27th, 2014 (05:43 pm)

Elton_John_Glasses1Last night I dreamed that I was on a luxury cruise ship. It was evening, and I heard Elton John music coming from a ballroom. It was "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," but it wasn't Elton John's voice. I began singing along, until I slipped into the room, and saw a young girl singing karaoke before a crowd of about two hundred people. Of course I stopped singing. I made my way quietly around the packed room, looking for a place to sit, and finally found a spot on the opposite side of the room.

The singer was about 10 years old, with long blonde hair, and she wore a white dress with an elaborate, rather gaudy geometric design on the front, in black and metallic gold. The outfit seemed outrageous enough for someone singing an Elton John tune, but I also noticed she wore no jewelry, and I thought that she should have had more bling, or at least an ostentatious pair of sunglasses, to capture that Elton John vibe. She sang pretty well; she hit the notes accurately enough, and her voice was pleasant. But I thought she needed to work on her expressiveness. On the other hand, she was only 10, and it must have taken a lot of courage and poise to stand up and sing in front of a group that size. She even looked comfortable doing it. In any case, the crowd was rapt; apparently everyone in the room was loving her.

I wondered if I should sign up to do a song later. It would be nerve-wracking, and I wasn't sure if there would be a song available that I knew well enough. I didn't even know if sign-ups were still open. I decided I'd pass.
