Teaser Tuesdays: Two-Part Invention

Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!(Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

My Teaser is from Madeleine L'Engle's memoir, Two-Part Invention. In this passage, Madeleine is a young actress, touring with a production of The Cherry Orchard. A small poodle named Touche also has a role in the play. Touche has been given to Madeleine, and they are completely devoted to each other. But Touche also causes difficulties for Madeleine and her roommate on the tour, another young actress, named Fiona, because at each city, they have trouble finding a hotel that will allow the two young women to have a dog in their room. This teaser is from page 55, and takes place the evening the touring company arrives in Baltimore:

"The boarding-house keeper gave one look at my beautiful, my talented, my adorable Touche, and said they didn't take dogs and couldn't make an exception even for a dog who worked to earn her own living. Fiona cajoled and wheedled with all her Irish charm, and Touche, true to her histrionic nature, stood on her hind legs and danced, but the boarding-house keeper was a hatchet-faced old sourpuss and there was no getting around her."

Great teaser

Sometimes there's nothing you can do about those hatchet faced sourpusses.
