Saturday Photo Hunt: INTRICATE

photohunter logo

Here is another Saturday Photo Hunt theme that I missed a few weeks ago: INTRICATE.
First, a dictionary definition:

  • in·tri·cate

  • [ íntrikət ]

  1. with many parts artfully combined: containing many details or small parts that are combined in a particularly complex or skillful way

  2. complex and difficult: complex and difficult to understand or resolve, through having many interrelated elements, parts, or factors

My photo for INTRICATE shows a detail of the exterior of The Duomo, the fabulously intricate cathedral of Florence, Italy. Officially it's known as the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, or Saint Mary of the Flowers. I visited there in 2012. The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century by sculptor and architect Arnolfo di Cambio, and the dome, which dominates the exterior, was added in the 15th century based on a design by Filippo Brunelleschi, one of the greatest Renaissance architects. I'm not sure who is responsible for the amazing carving in this picture; what genius it would have taken to carve something so fluid and so delicate out of stone!
