American Road Trip Adventure: Day 6 (Part Three)

September 21st, 2013 (06:22 pm)

I've just returned from a long road trip. I was traveling to a conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, and we made it a family vacation, to show our son more of this big, amazing country. I blogged from the road, but I didn't want to advertise to every burglar on the internet that our house was empty, so I've waited until now to start posting the entries.

Monday, August 19
Rapid City, South Dakota, to Devils Tower & Casper, Wyoming

Part Three: Spearfish Canyon and Another Giant President's Head
We had left that morning from Rapid City, South Dakota, intending to drive to Casper by dinnertime, with a stop at Devil's Tower. But the road less traveled beckoned, and we chose the scenic route. We detoured through Deadwood for lunch, as I've already described. Then we continued past an oversized bust of President Lincoln (those South Dakotans sure love their giant heads) and on through Spearfish Canyon.

Spearfish Canyon is a narrow, steep-sided canyon in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The rugged slopes are covered with ponderosa and spruce Pine, the creek banks with aspen, birch, and oak trees. Waterfalls cascade down the cliffs, including Bridal Veil Falls (posing, below, with Jon Morgan's ring-tailed pheasant, who was feeling blurry that day). Queen Anne's lace swayed in the breeze along the side of the road. Bob was driving that afternoon, but Jon Morgan and I took hundreds of photos through the car windows. We also stopped a few times to walk around, enjoy the dramatic landscape, and snap more pictures.

It was a lovely spot, and well worth the extra driving time.
