American Road Trip Adventure: Day 2

September 3rd, 2013 (09:37 pm)

I've just returned from a long road trip. I was traveling to a conference in Salt Lake City, Utah, and we made it a family vacation, to show our son more of this big, amazing country. I blogged from the road, but I didn't want to advertise to every burglar on the internet that our house was empty, so I've waited until now to start posting the entries.

New Paris, Ohio, to Madison, Wisconsin
446 Miles

This morning we packed up the rental car at our hotel in New Paris, Ohio, and paused for a moment before getting on the road to fulfill a request of my son's. Jon Morgan wanted to WALK across the state line into Indiana. This was easy enough; the state line ran along the edge of the hotel property. So he walked to Indiana. Then we fired up the Cadillac and headed West.

Our plan was to drive like crazy the first few days, to get past the part of the country we can more easily visit whenever we want, and then take more time for sightseeing once we were further west. So mostly we were going for mileage today, though we did squeeze in some time for a family visit in the evening.

Here is Jon Morgan, his grandmother Jean, and my husband Bob. (I should have had them do the classic monkey pose: "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.")

It was a mostly uneventful day of Midwest driving. We crossed Indiana, entered Illinois, and then headed straight north to Madison, Wisconsin. In Madison, we stopped first to see Bob's mother at her retirement community. She seemed thrilled to hear Jon Morgan play her piano and, as a former piano teacher, to give him some tips. After a meal there, we headed on to the home of Bob's brother Charlie and his talented and gracious wife, Lynn. We could stay only for the night, but it was great to fit in a brief visit. And do some laundry.

In the morning, it was back into the car for a particularly full day of driving. Destination: South Dakota.
