Happy Read Across America Day!

February 28th, 2013 (09:01 pm)

Do you like green eggs and ham? Do you speak for the trees? Dr. Seuss (a.k.a. Theodor Geisel) would have turned 109 years old this weekend. Elementary schools across the country will be celebrating Read Across America day on Friday, in honor of his birthday. Last year, I wrote a Dr. Seuss poem for the librarian at my son's school to use during the festivities. I've had to update it a bit for this year. Here it is:

For Dr. Seuss, on his 109th Birthday!

By Catherine M. Petrini

All the Whos down in Who-ville adore Dr. Seuss,
For his birthday they'll serve you some beezelnut juice.
And then they'll do something he'd like most of all
Every Who down in Who-ville, the tall and the small
Will swallow their schlopp and then rush to their book,
And they'll READ, READ, READ, READ from the book that they took.
And the most enterprising will read to a kid,
(Or if they choose not to, they'll say that they did.)

If you'd like to join them, I say that you may,
When they celebrate Theodor's birth on this day.
With the Whos, and the Lorax, the Grinch, and the Sneetches.
And Mt. Vernon students and Mt. Vernon teachas.
And that overtall cat who is always in style,
With his red and white hat and his all-knowing smile.

So whether it's raining or whether it's sunny,
We all can have lots of book fun that is funny.
Join us today (with Thing One and Thing Two).
Your mother will not mind at all if you do.

Happy Read Across America Day!
