The theme for this week's Saturday Photo Hunt is "Bells." Here is the Liberty Bell, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, here in the U.S.

I took this close-up shot a few years ago, when I visited Philadelphia with my husband and son.

The bell was cast in the Whitechapel Foundry, in London, and sent to Philadelphia in 1753. It's 12 feet in circumference and weighs 2,080 pounds. The clapper alone weighs 44 pounds. Unfortunately, as big and strong as it looks, the bell turned out to be too brittle; it cracked the first time it was rung. In this shot, you can see the attempts at a repair, but the bell has never rung again.

Oh wow, so it cracked the first time. I wonder if the buyers (council, govt, citizens?, sorry I don't know USA History) got a refund from the manufacturers. I would have been asking for my money back and then got another bell made elsewhere.
