Saturday Photo Hunt: KITE

Another Saturday, another Saturday Photo Hunt. This week, the theme is "Kite." I found this one to be difficult. I just haven't taken a lot of kite pictures, and was having trouble thinking of anything else I do have in my portfolio that would offer an alternative interpretation of the theme. I almost posted a paragliding shot from Jackson, Wyoming. Then I remembered a particular beach my friend Sheila and I discovered on Oahu a few years ago.

One day during our idyllic week on Oahu, we drove out to explore the northern part of the island. This wasn't completely unstructured wandering. Sheila's teenage daughter had desperately wanted to join us on the trip. When she couldn't come along, she'd asked us to do some sightseeing for her. She was a big fan of the TV show LOST, which was on at the time. (To be honest, her mother and I were fans too.) She supplied us with a list of shooting locations, and asked us to find some of them and take pictures for her. As it turned out, it was a grand way of structuring a day of what otherwise would have been wonderful but aimless meandering.

While searching for the exact beach where the plane crashed, we came across what we came to know as the Kite Beach. I don't know if it was always like this, but on the day when we visited, dozens of kites were being flown from this beach or were resting there between flights. This photo shows only a few of the many kites, but I chose it partly because I like the sunburst!

By the way, we eventually did pinpoint the LOST plane crash site within a few hundred yards, and even found the waterfall where Kate and Sawyer swam, among other shooting locations. But along the way, we saw all sorts of things, like the Kite Beach, that we never would have found otherwise.
