The Saturday PhotoHunt is a photography blog meme that was started in March 2006. Each photo hunter posts an original photo on his or her own blog that gives the photographer's interpretation of the weekly theme, and posts a link to the blog on the PhotoHunt site, in the Comments section for that theme. For the week of Oct. 13, the theme is "Empty."

I took this photograph a few years ago at the National Arboretum in Washington, D.C. The columns were shaped from sandstone quarried in Virginia. In 1828, they were erected on the East Portico of the U.S. National Capitol building, in an early phase of its construction. At the time, the dome wasn't built yet. Design changes over the years led to a much larger dome than originally envisioned, and when the now-familiar dome was completed in 1864, it visually dwarfed the columns. So they were replaced by larger ones.

Eventually, these original columns were brought here to the National Arboretum, where they rise from a hill like the empty ruin of an ancient structure. Read more about their history and see basic visitor information here.
