Saturday Photo Hunt: Two Flats

February 4th, 2012 (01:49 pm)

Today's Photo Hunt theme is FLAT. I narrowed my photo choices to two, but I can't decide between them. So I'm posting both here. This first photo is one I snapped at the Coca Cola museum in Atlanta, Georgia. Let's hope the Coke isn't as flat as the trio of ladies drinking it.

Below is a photo of Flat Stanley. If you have elementary school kids, you know exactly what I'm talking about. For those of you who don't, Flat Stanley is a wildly popular book (now a series) by Jeff Brown, in which a boy named Stanley Lambchop is flattened to the thickness of paper when the bulletin board over his bed falls on him. Being flat turns out to be a lot of fun, and even allows him to visit a friend in California when he can't afford airline fare, by having his parents slip him into an envelope and mail him there.

All over the country, students learn about geography by making a Flat Stanley (or sometimes Stella) paper doll and mailing it to a friend or relative who lives far away. The recipient hosts Stanley for a few weeks, showing him the local sites, and then sends him back to the child with postcards, photographs, and other souvenirs of his trip, usually along with a letter telling what Stanley saw and did there. The photo is of a Flat Stanley I hosted last year when he visited from Ohio. He had heard that he was famous and wanted to see his books in the bookstore.
