Goodbye, Dragon Lady

November 22nd, 2011 (09:52 pm)

current mood: sad

I just heard that author Anne McCaffrey passed away today at the age of 85. I first met her six years ago when she was Grand Master at the Nebula Awards. In fact, the LiveJournal profile picture of me in the pink sweater over a black dress was taken that night. That's a blue dragon I'm holding. These colorful little guys were part of the table decorations, in tribute to Anne's many books about the dragonriders of Pern. The dragons were auctioned off for charity at the end of the evening. I still have mine.

At the time, I was beginning research on my own dragon book. I spoke with Anne that weekend about it, and she generously agreed to let me, an unknown writer, interview her. She thought of dragons as fascinating creatures that had been unfairly demonized in Western society, and set out in her own books to change their reputation by giving them important work to do in partnership with humans. Below is a photo of me with Anne at the book signing that Nebulas weekend.

She was funny, talented, forceful, generous, imaginative, and smart. She will be missed.
