The Haunted Computer 2: The Ghost Has Left The Machine

January 9th, 2008 (10:38 am)

current mood: relieved

My computer is recovering. It had more "malicious code" (different from the earlier spyware), which is now gone. But some of my most vexing problems were caused by a new backup system we'd been trying out. During the 30-day trial it was OK, after its first few tedious days of copying everything in my system. It worked fine for a few weeks, until the trial ended. Then it stopped backing things up, pending my decision about whether to pay to continue with this particular software or try a different package. But while it was no longer backing up, it was still busy preparing files to eventually back up. This meant that whatever else I was trying to do on the computer, it was constantly and clandestinely poring over all my files and making copies of them in order to back them up, and then not knowing what to do with the copies. This overload and the resulting confusion caused my computer to become psychotic and to open fire on my home office with an AK47.

That last part is an exaggeration, of course. It was a 9mm.

My resident techie, Bob, figured all this out -- though he described it in techie language, unintelligible to the rest of us. But the whole situation could have been easily avoided if only the software maker had mentioned that suspending backups does not suspend all backup-related activity.

So for now, the backup software has been arrested, pending charges. The computer is being rehabilitated and is quickly becoming, once again, a useful member of society. My broadband is working the way it's supposed to. And the computer is no longer suffering from epileptic seizures, ghostly visitations, and psychotic episodes. For now.

Me in Color

This will help: for MS Vista, go into "Preferences", then "General", then disable "Kill All Humans."

When would we meet again?
