Moo-ving Up to the Big Time

July 26th, 2011 (10:33 pm)

current mood: bemused

My husband Bob called me last weekend while visiting his mother in Madison, Wisconsin. He was speaking to me from the county fairgrounds, where he had just been named one of the winners in the Dane County Fair's Cow-Mooing competition. Yes, you read that correctly. Bob was one of the elite few who triumphed at mooing like a cow. And he did it in Wisconsin, America's Dairyland, where presumably all the very best cow-mooers live.

I am just so proud. Of course, I always knew he had it in him.

Bob and the other winners have been invited to attend the Wisconsin State Fair next month, where they will represent Dane County in the Wisconsin State Cow-Mooing Competition. Unfortunately, another airline fare to Wisconsin is not in the cards for this summer, so for now he'll have to rest on his countywide cow-mooing laurels, and miss out on that chance to compete in the big leagues.

In addition to four free tickets to the Wisconsin State Fair, his other fabulous prizes include a cow hat with horns, a cow-mooing contest t-shirt, and a cowbell to wear around his neck. Those will go over well at the Library of Congress.

Unfortunately, I was not there to witness Bob's moment of glory, but my sister-in-law LuAnn was. Below, I'm posting the photo she took of him in some of his cow-related finery. (The t-shirt he's wearing below is not the one from the competition but is appropriate, nonetheless. It's one that I bought him years ago. It shows a cow standing in front of the U.S. Capitol, with a caption that reads, "OK, I've seen D.C. Now can I go home?")
