The Mother of All Thunderstorms

August 8th, 2010 (05:51 pm)

current mood: relieved

A violent thunderstorm bashed through here Thursday afternoon and evening. Yes, that was probably my neighborhood you saw on the national news. Of the whole D.C. area, it hit Alexandria the worst. And in Alexandria, it hit my neighborhood the hardest. We've got power outages affecting just about everyone at one time or another, downed trees crashing through roofs and windshields, tree limbs falling across roadways, and yellow police tape blocking off streets.

My power went out around 3:45 p.m. Thursday. We were lucky; ours came back on before noon Friday. Many of our neighbors still didn't have power Sunday morning. Some are still in the dark now, on Sunday evening. My son's school and many businesses in town had to be closed on Friday because they had no power.

Trees crashed down all around the neighborhood, many of them on streets, cars, and houses. There are still roads closed all over the area. In fact, my own road has been closed today because of cables that fell down across it last night.

But we're safe, and we lost only a few items that thawed out in the freezer or spoiled in the fridge. Here are some photographs taken around the neighborhood on Thursday evening. This first one shows the storm front approaching:

Next, the police seem to have run out of generic "POLICE LINE" yellow tape, and used "CRIME SCENE" to block off this road, instead:

More shots of downed trees:

Note the damage to the house's porch on that last one. Now, here's Jon Morgan posing by a street sign that was ripped off by the 70 mph wind gusts. This is the street that runs alongside our corner lot, half a block from our house.

And finally, the sunset after the storm:

That tree seemed perfectly healthy too.
Glad you're all okay!

Never p*** off Mother Nature!

I'll echo the rest -- glad you're in one piece.
