Camera Shopping

Anyone out there got a camera recommendation? My trusty old film camera has died, and I'm in the market for a digital one. But, while I am a good photographer, I am not a high-tech one. I've never owned a digital camera; heck, I've seldom even used one. And I just don't know what to buy. I'm not looking for a professional-level camera; I do want a high-end amateur one, at least 8 megapixels. It needs to be small enough to stick in a purse, but it doesn't have to be small enough to fit in a pocket. I don't want to mess with multiple lenses, so I'm not interested in another SLR, but I would like a fixed lens with a strong zoom as well as good capability for close-up shots. Also, I need something that can take one shot after another without any lag time in between. And a viewfinder. Can anyone suggest a camera that will suit my needs?

I've been really happy with the Canon Digital Elph (I think it goes by the name "powershot" these days). The one you saw me with in Richmond is a SD400. We just got Mike's daughter one with an 800 or 850 designation. The Canon interface is easy to use, and it takes darn good photos. I just bought a new Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3, with a 10x zoom and so many presets I'll never use them all. I likes it. A lot. ;)
