Missive From Montreal I: Just Ducky

August 8th, 2009 (11:33 pm)

I'm finally getting around to posting something about WorldCon. A few thoughts so far:

Friday was the ceremony for some of the awards for juvenile and YA books. Cory Doctorow won the Golden Duck for Little Brother. (NOTE TO SELF: write a sf YA book so I can be eligible to win a Golden Ducky too.) Henry Melton won the Eleanor Cameron Award for middle-grade sf, for his book Lighter Than Air. I was one of the kids' book authors on the panel afterward with Cory, Henry, and several others. We discussed juvenile and YA books and the recognition programs for them. Nice panel! I found the interaction to be really interesting, especially since the small but enthusiastic audience knew a lot about the topic.

Sure wish the Green Room had Diet Coke....

Lively panel yesterday on whether genocide is a good thing. As a plot device, that is. Connie Willis is one of the funniest people I know. I'd like to say she had me on the floor, laughing - except that the room was so packed I was sitting on the floor anyway.

My book reading was today, and - joy of joys - people came! It's possible that they showed up to hear the other two writers who were reading with me. But I'm OK with that. I envisioned myself reading aloud to an empty room, and it was not a happy thought.
