Pysanky Painting: an Egg-cellent Activity

April 6th, 2009 (04:01 pm)

It's the first day of spring break, and I've been making Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky) with my son. Well, actually, being seven years old, he colored one egg and then got bored and wandered off to play. But I'm still working on them. I don't have any pictures yet of today's efforts, which are still underway. But here are some of mine that I photographed last April, to give you an idea of what these look like.

Wow! That takes patience... and persistence...

I got an entire ONE egg finished today (still need to varnish it and add fittings). This used to go a lot faster when I wasn't trying to get my own done while helping a first-grader do one of his own! I'm hoping to do at least one more tomorrow.

Except for the constant interruptions to help him, I find this kind of detailed artistic work to be strangely relaxing.
