You Know the Economy Is Lousy When...

current mood: shocked

You know the economy is lousy when you get laid off from a VOLUNTEER job.

For 20 years I have anchored a live, bi-weekly radio show on The Washington Ear, a nonprofit radio station that is an on-air reading service for listeners who are blind or have other disabilities that prevent them from reading print materials. This is a volunteer position, not a paid one. Today I received a phone call from the station. Money is so tight that we can no longer afford to broadcast our own programming, so all the on-air volunteers and several paid engineers are being let go.

Bummer.

I'm so sorry. I know how much you love that position.

Actually, unemployment is very low here, and probably getting lower, as a new presidential administration comes in and needs to hire. But some people and some companies are still feeling the pinch. Apparently nonprofits are among those.
