Nutritionally Negligent

October 5th, 2008 (07:25 pm)

My husband fed our son dinner tonight. It consisted of one slice of whole-grain bread, two apple slices, and, in our 6-year-old's words, "a whole bunch of potato chips." When I told my husband I did not consider this a suitable meal, he thought I was being uptight.

Now, to anyone out there who is not my husband: Does this sound to you like a wholesome, balanced meal?

No, Jon Morgan's Mom, that was not a wholesome meal.
I mean, where's the Campbell's soup at least?

This does not constitute a balanced meal. It does however constitute a legitimate meal, meaning it was more than one type of food group represented.

Whole grains...check. Fiber...check. ...And didn't they tell us in Idaho that the potato is the perfect food?

I suspect they weren't referring to it in its potato chip form.

Perhaps not balanced, but it sure sounds like something I would eat. Except I would have thrown in a piece of cheese for protein. :)

Alas, my son will not eat cheese, except for the orangey kind in the middle of those little cheesey sandwich crackers, the ones that come in packs of six. The package claims it is real cheese, but I have my doubts.

Me too. Real cheese is not gritty.

Re: Dinner

Nah, he didn't really get the fruit part right. Two skinny little apple slices aren't enough to qualify as a serving. I'd have put at least a half an apple's worth of slices there.
