Another Weekend Speeds By

July 20th, 2008 (11:31 pm)
sleepy

current mood: sleepy

The weekend is over, and it seems like it only just started. Yesterday I drove up to the Philadelphia area for a NobleFusion meeting. (It's a writer's group.) I should be able to make it in three hours, but there was construction in Baltimore and I-95 was clogged up through Delaware, and the trip ended up taking four hours instead. Still, it was great seeing everyone once I finally arrived. We had a lot of great stories to critique, and then I totally lost track of the time and didn't leave until 8:30. By the time I was halfway through Delaware on the way home, I knew I was too tired to drive all the way back. So I aimed for my usual halfway rest stop, at Exit 80 in Maryland, and stopped at a hotel there that I knew was clean and convenient and not outrageously expensive. Unfortunately, the overnight bag I usually keep in the back of my car was not there yesterday, so all I had was my gym bag, but that was better than nothing. I made it back home this morning.

Now to think of some fun, entertaining, and at least somewhat educational activities to do with my son this week, his last week of summer vacation. School starts next Monday. We might go visit one of the caves we haven't been to yet. Or tour a factory that makes potato chips or chocolate or something else that will capture his interest. Anyone have any ideas for something that's within a two-hour drive of Alexandria, Virginia? I try to avoid the Washington, D.C., museums and other attractions during the crowds of peak tourist season. But we love day trips!

Ack! Stayed in a hotel?

You should have said something. That's why we have a guest room (admittedly, it's not yet furnished the way we'd like, but it's got a mattress and there's the guest bathroom, and Valerie would have cooked you something amazing!).

Bah!

Thanks for the offer. But I didn't realize I wasn't going to make it all the way home until I was well on my way there. I'll keep it in mind for the future, though!
