Finally, a Simple (and Free) Solution

A few months ago, we finally got broadband, with a wireless network for all the household computers. Since then, I've had frequent trouble accessing the internet from my computer, though it usually worked on the other two computers. Many days I couldn't get a connection at all. I suspected the signal was being blocked by the several plaster walls covered with bookshelves that stand between my computer and the router. I had read that wireless signals do not like plaster walls and other dense materials. But the router needs to be near a cable connection, and the only other one in the house is upstairs, even farther away from my computer. So moving the router would have meant calling Comcast to come back, at Comcast rates, to wire us for cable in another part of the house.

This week I suddenly thought of something really, really simple. And free. I grabbed the adapter that's plugged into my USB port, and I stretched the wire several feet across the room, so that it's in front of the door. Voila! One fewer wall for the signal to travel through. I haven't had a signal problem since. And I didn't have to deal with the Evil Ones at Comcast.

Yes, I am a computer genius.
