Teaser Tuesday: Balzac & the Little Chinese Seamstress

January 19th, 2016 (10:42 pm)

TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3
Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

And here is mine for this week:

Today's teaser is from the excellent little novel I finished reading this morning, Balzac & the Little Chinese Seamstress, by Dai Sijie. Here is the teaser; you'll find it on page 21:

"The princess of Phoenix mountain wore pale pink canvas shoes, which were both sturdy and supple and through which you could see her flexing her toes as she worked the treadle of her sewing machine. There was nothing out of the ordinary about the cheap, homemade shoes, and yet, in a place where nearly everyone went barefoot, they caught the eye, seeming delicate and sophisticated."
