Teaser Tuesday: The Triple Agent

TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3
Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

And here is mine for this week:

Today's teaser is from one of the books I'm currently reading, The Triple Agent: The Al-Qaeda Mole Who Infiltrated the CIA, by Joby Warrick.

This nonfiction book describes the events leading up to a terrorist attack that killed a lot of CIA agents and contractors at a secret CIA base in Afghanistand in 2009. The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber who had led the Americans to believe he was working for them to infiltrate Al-Qaeda, when in reality he was doing exactly the opposite. The book is a real page-turner, but I've decided to take my teaser from a lighter moment.

One of the things that surprised me about this book is the fact that two highly placed female CIA employees were working in the facility in Afghanistan; one of them as base commander. The other woman, Elizabeth Hanson, was the expert "targeter" in charge of the effort to determine the location of Osama bin Laden and his top people. (The job of a targeter involved collecting and synthesizing information from maps, surveillance reports, intercepted communications, informant interviews, internet chatter, and more, to determine the location of someone the CIA was searching for.)

This quote is about Hanson, who seems to have been quite a character: she was known for wearing flip-flops to work at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia; for having a raunchy sense of humor; and for being willing to stand up to anyone, including Army generals, taking people by surprise because it's not what they expected from a pretty, blonde 30-year-old. Of course, she was also known for being very, very good at her job.

Her mother was horrified that she'd decided to take the posting in Afghanistan, but said that Elizabeth, known to her family as "Bitsy" had always been tenacious and up for any challenge. This passage is from page 95:

Once, as a little girl of about four years, Bitsy had plopped into her chair at the family dinner table and announced, in very mature English, that she "wanted to try everything in life, and learn everything there is to learn." With that, she picked up a crystal goblet of ice water and bit into it so sharply that it shattered.
