Teaser Tuesdays, A Bookish Meme: Survivors

TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3
Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

And here is mine for this week:

The book is Survivors: True Stories of Children in the Holocaust, by Allan Zullo and Mara Bovsun. This nonfiction book is a collection of vignettes, written from interviews with nine Jewish men and women who survived the Holocaust as children.

One of them is a little boy named Mathei, a Romanian Jew who escaped off a train headed for the death camps and fell in with a group of Polish partisans fighting the Nazis. In this scene, the partisans have identified a family of collaborators, but when they arrive at the house to punish the family, the only person at home is a teenage girl. Mathei, age 10, is new to the group. The leader tells him the girl must die, and that he must prove his loyalty by being the one who executes her. Mathei doesn't know what to do. Killing the girl would be murder, and murder is wrong. But if he does not, he won't be given any food.

"Mathei stared at the girl but didn't really see her. And as hurtful images flashed in his mind — his schoolmates beating him up in the pond, the soldiers dragging away his father, the train heading to the death camp — Mathei raised his pistol and aimed it at the girl."
