Teaser Tuesdays: Truth & Beauty

TeaserTuesdays-ADailyRhythm3
Teaser Tuesdays
is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (Make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away. You don’t want to ruin the book for others.)
• Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR (To-Be-Read) lists if they like your teasers!

And here is mine for this week:

I started reading a book this morning, but I don't have it with me right now, so I'm going to bend the rules and post a passage from the book I finished reading yesterday. The book is Ann Patchett's memoir, Truth & Beauty, which is the story of her friendship with another writer, Lucy Grealy. Lucy is a talented, mercurial, and charismatic young poet who makes friends everywhere she goes but is painfully insecure because of her face, which has been dramatically disfigured by childhood cancer and its treatments. Ann is a dependable, responsible, methodical, and goal-driven workhorse of a novelist and creative nonfiction writer. But in this passage, both are quite young. Ann is living at a kind of writer's retreat, working on her first novel. And Lucy, visiting her there, has charmed the other writers she shares the house with. Ann talks about work on her book and her process of understanding her characters. This is from page 87.

"Michael Klein, the poet who lived downstairs from me and had, of course, become great friends with Lucy, was known to open my door and shout up the stairs, 'Stop typing so much!' as my computer sat right above his bed and the sound of the clicking keys drove him crazy after a while. I walked on the beach in the morning in the freezing wind and rain, cultivating a kind of insanity wherein people who do not actually exist start talking to you."

Trust & Beauty

I listened to the audiobook of this a few years ago (it was a book club selection at the time). Ann Patchett narrated the book and it was well done. It's not something I would ordinarily have picked up but for book club but I did enjoy it. It was an interesting peek into the world of writers.

My teaser this week is from Pretending the Dance by Diane Chamberlain: http://www.foofynotfoofy.com/foofynotfoofy/2015/8/4/teaser-tuesday-pretending-the-dance
