The Month of Letters Begins!

February 1st, 2015 (11:44 am)

LetterMo2015square-50%It's February, time for A Month of Letters Challenge. Write and send at least one letter, postcard, or other piece of handwritten mail each day (well, each day that the post office is open) and respond to every one you receive. You can send full-length letters, postcards, birthday cards, or anything else that occurs to you. You can write to people you know, or to other Month of Letters (LetterMo) participants around the world.

Want a pen pal? Check the forums on the Month of Letters website for others who are looking for correspondents. No commitment beyond February, though I have several "LetterMo" penpals that I still correspond with. It's all free, and there seem to be more people taking part each year. You can win challenges by sending the most letters, or by accomplishing such goals as sending from a new mailbox, sending a care package to someone in the military, writing a "Jane Austen" letter with an old-fashioned dip pen or even a quill pen, sending mail overseas, and more.

Fantasy author Mary Robinette Kowal started the Month of Letters challenge in 2011, after she took a month off from the internet the previous fall and remembered how much she enjoyed sending and receving actual mail. If you miss old-fashioned letter-writing, you should join!
