Teaser Tuesdays: The Rosie Project

July 22nd, 2014 (11:07 pm)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along. Just do the following:

• Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Simsion - The Rosie Project

My teaser today is from page 63 of The Rosie Project, by Graeme Simsion. This is a hilarious novel about Don Tillman, a genetics professor who has a good heart but appallingly poor social skills, probably as a result of Asperger Syndrome, though he has never been diagnosed.

One of the tasks on his meticulously kept to-do list is to find a wife. And after years of seldom being able to get a date, let alone sustain a relationship, he hits upon a solution: a long, detailed questionnaire filled out by as many women as possible, to eliminate the ones who are unsuitable. Don's friend Gene promises to go over the completed surveys and set up meetings with anyone who survives the screening process. When a surprising young woman named Rosie shows up at his door, Don feels drawn to her, although she meets almost none of his criteria. Later, he calls to complain to Gene, and instead reaches Gene's wife and begins to rant:

"Gene sent me the world's most incompatible woman. A barmaid. Late, vegetarian, disorganized, irrational, unhealthy, smoker -- smoker! -- psychological problems, can't cook, mathematically incompetent, unnatural hair color. I presume he was making a joke."
