Saturday Photo Hunt: BLUE

August 20th, 2013 (10:31 am)

The theme for this week's Saturday Photo Hunt is BLUE.

This was one of those themes that is difficult not because I can't find appropriate images, but because I have too many. I love the effect of photographing a subject against a bright blue sky, and I guess I do it a lot. But I was determined to choose one photo, so here's one I particularly like. This was taken in Washington, D.C., at the National Arboretum. A set of columns originally made for the U.S. Capitol building stand on a hillside there, like the ruin of some ancient Greek temple. They were moved here after the Capitol design changed and the old set were considered out of proportion with the new building.

Fragmentary Blue
Why make so much of fragmentary blue
In here and there a bird, or butterfly,
Or flower, or wearing-stone, or open eye,
When heaven presents in sheets the solid hue?

Since earth is earth, perhaps, not heaven (as yet)--
Though some savants make earth include the sky;
And blue so far above us comes so high,
It only gives our wish for blue a whet.

Robert Frost

Stay tuned for next week (or whenever I manage to get around to it) when the theme will be SWANKY.
